MAY 2008
Many people have remarked lately on the lovely energy at the Shala! With the arrival of warmer weather and so many eager and sincere students around the studio, I believe we are all feeling inspired.
April brought more activity than I had expected for my first month. Mid month we were honoured to have the folks from City TV film live from our studio in which Scott Soe, former Stampeders football player enthusiastically attempted some yoga moves with our Strength and Soul Guru Kim Wiebe. That positive event was countered by thieves breaking into our sacred space the very same evening, how dare they! Fortunately not much was taken aside from some money we had been saving for our Mysore charity……but these savings have been more than replaced from earnings in our Saturday community classes. I am humbled by the generosity of those of you who never fail to show up with a donation to the Calgary Food Bank. We were happy to co-host a charity Strength and Soul class with Kim at which generous participants helped to raise over $1000 for Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids. Again, the giving nature of people and sense of community at the Shala was evident.
One phrase I’ve heard several times the past few days is “my hubby is somewhat interested in doing yoga with me but is intimidated and out of shape”. Ok, hubbies, put down the remote and let’s get going. The benefits of an Ashtanga yoga class will far outlast your initial discomfort, and our instructors and staff bend over backwards (harhar) to make you feel welcome and safe. Perhaps our May special of $149 for new members will be the final enticement to get you in the door and onto a mat. If you’re apprehensive, try reading this bit about Molly the three legged pony and how brave she is against all odds. I hope my attempts to guilt you into trying your first yoga class are working, because I truly believe in the gift of Ashtanga yoga and how it can transform our lives into a more enriched experience. It never hurts to let you know that we end our classes with a wee nap - blankies included.
Please note that we’ll be closing our doors on Monday, May 19th to do a few small renovations, and other class changes next weekend are as follows:
Saturday, May 17th:
3pm class CANCELLED
Sunday, May 18th:
4pm class CANCELLED
5:45pm prenatal CANCELLED
Monday, May 19th:
ALL CLASSES CANCELLED
We hope to see you soon. Happy Mother's Day to all the momma's out there.

News from the Mysore Room

For those that are wondering, Jeff and Harmony are safe and sound in India and I'm sure happy to be at "home" with their compadres (is that not how they refer to close friends in India?). Colin has taken over the mysore room with mad fury. It's a ton of fun, if your idea of a good time means getting up before dawn and sweating, grunting and being pushed out of your comfort zone. Seriously though, it's pretty awesome and Colin is full of insight and witty comebacks.
Please note changes for May:
Mysore hours are now 6:00 - 9:00am.
Friday Primary Series is now mysore class 6-9am!!
We are so excited to announce that Jeff and Harmony will be conducting an Ashtanga Yoga Teacher & Practitioner Training in August. Click here for more details.

An incredible book in honour of Guruji's 90th birthday a few years ago. You might want to start thinking about a gift as his bday is coming up in July......

This section might need to be changed to "the restaurants at which I love to eat"......starting with: Dairy Lane Cafe
If you want to help, please email some delicious recipes here and I'll share them in the next news edition.

Stay tuned for a special friend. |
